Inside Look: My Simpson Strong-Tie Student Scholarship Trip

Over three days, she visited our home office in Pleasanton and our manufacturing facility in Stockton, CA; participated in a community service project; and had the opportunity to see our products installed on the jobsite. Learn more about Leslie’s experience and the impact of the trip.

This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to attend the Simpson Strong-Tie (SST) Student Scholarship trip, where I got an inside look at one of the leading companies in structural building solutions. The experience was not only educational but also truly inspiring.

Day 1: Unveiling the Legacy

We began at the SST home office in Pleasanton, CA, diving into how it all started. Barclay Simpson founded the company with a simple yet powerful mission: he wanted to help make buildings safer and stronger after witnessing the destruction caused by California earthquakes in the 1950s. His vision laid the foundation for what SST is today — a company driven by innovation and a commitment to quality and safety.

The day was filled with insights, especially when we got a sneak peek at SST’s latest cutting-edge software. This isn’t just any software; it’s transforming the industry, making design and construction more efficient and precise. One of the most inspiring parts of the day was hearing from Matthew Cristi, a former scholarship winner whose career has skyrocketed with SST’s support. His journey showed me the endless possibilities that lie ahead.

But it wasn’t all work! We wrapped up the day with a trip to San Francisco, exploring the iconic Alcatraz Island and Pier 33. And dinner at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. Let’s just say it lived up to the hype!

Day 2: Behind the Scenes of Innovation

Our second day took us to the manufacturing facility and the Tyrell (“Tye”) Gilb Research Laboratory in Stockton, CA, where the magic of SST’s products came to life. We toured the plant, witnessing firsthand the rigorous testing and manufacturing processes that ensure each component meets the highest standards.

The breakout sessions were a highlight, allowing us to dive deeper into different components. I left with a newfound respect for the engineering and craftsmanship that go into every product SST creates. From structural foundation anchoring to custom nailers, the level of detail and precision was mind-blowing.

Day 3: Building More Than Structures

On the final day, we had the chance to give back to the community — something that resonated deeply with me. Partnering up, we built benches and planter boxes for a local middle school in Pleasanton. It was a hands-on reminder of why companies like SST matter — they’re not just building structures; they’re helping build and maintain communities. The day continued with a Q&A panel with SST’s leadership, where we had the opportunity to ask questions and gain insights from industry leaders. Their wisdom and passion for their work left a lasting impression on me.

We ended the trip with a visit to a Lennar Homes jobsite, where SST components were being installed for real-world use. Seeing the products we’d learned about integrated into actual homes was the perfect way to bring everything full circle.

Reflections: A Trip to Remember

This experience was more than just an educational trip; it was a glimpse into the future I aspire to build. From learning about SST’s rich history and innovative technologies to contributing to the community and engaging with industry leaders, I walked away feeling inspired and empowered.

Simpson Strong-Tie doesn’t just create products; they create possibilities. And this trip? It was just the beginning of mine.
